5 Ways to Nail your Bathroom Lighting
Over a lifetime, we spend countless hours bathing, showering, shaving, and dressing. According to BathroomDeal, the average person spends more than two years of their life in the bathroom!
With so much time spent there, you’ll need the right lighting to support all of your bathroom activities. Cefito is here to give you top tips for lighting your bathroom so you’re never left in the dark.
General lighting
First is the general lighting, which will illuminate the entire bathroom. This should be bright enough so you can move around the bathroom and identify any spills or other hazards. You may only need a single light, or you may need a few downlights above high traffic areas.
Light according to task
Next up is your task lighting. This will be the most important around the vanity, where you need even lighting for applying makeup, skincare, shaving, and other close-up tasks. A mirror with a ring light, wall or pendant lights can be a good idea, but avoid creating directional shadows like a downlight above the mirror would.
Check the CRI
The Colour Rendering Index (or CRI) is a measure of how well artificial white light reflects the colour of objects compared to natural light. It is measured by averaging a light’s R value; its ability to faithfully render colours across 15 test colour samples. Particularly for the vanity, where you will likely be applying skincare and makeup, you’ll want a light with a CRI of 80 or above to make sure your visage is consistent across different lighting circumstances.
Choose your bathroom colour scheme
This will depend on your personal taste. Warm light helps create a peaceful environment but can skew darker and give off a yellowish hue. Cool light is brighter and more suited to places that need clear illumination, but if it’s too bright and white, it can come off as sterile. Daylight style lights do what they say: mimic natural daylight, making it the perfect temperature for daily makeup application. Of course, depending on your needs, you may want to find lighting that does all three.
Use bathroom accent lighting (but not too much)
Use a strip of LED lights under the vanity, behind bathroom mirrors or along the floor for soft illumination that highlights the best parts of your bathroom and helps you navigate the bathroom at night. Of course, don’t go overboard – you don’t want the accent lighting to clash with your task lighting.
